What Agile Isn't

Response

There are a number of common agile misunderstandings. The list includes:

  • Agile is free of process control

  • The Engineers are running the project

  • There is no defined scope

  • There is no control of costs

  • It’s only suitable for software or IT projects

  • The Product Owner directs the team

  • Limited commitment is made to milestones

  • Any scope that is defined is constantly changing

  • Product Owner writes all the requirements (user stories)

  • Things are made faster

  • Agile is free of process control- > Process requires daily monitoring

  • The Engineers are running the project- > Clear senior direction is provided

  • There is no defined scope - > Short-term scope is detailed, long-term is less detailed

  • There is no control of costs- > Drawn-down on a quarterly basis

  • It’s only suitable for software or IT projects - > Suitable for all types, including, HR Procurement and Support

  • The Product Owner directs the team - >Product Owner defines the goals, the team is self-organising

  • Limited commitment is made to milestones - > Key milestones are agreed, scope is changed

  • Any scope that is defined is constantly changing- > Scope is relatively fixed, the priority and detail is changing

  • Product Owner writes all the requirements (user stories) - > Any team member can write them, Product owner has final approval

  • Things are made faster - > Most important things are made first
