Response
As more and more agile teams move their ceremonies online it is important they take the necessary steps to ensure these digital ceremonies remain effective. Here’s our top eight recommendations for ensuring these digital ceremonies prove to be as effective as the in-person ones.
These recommendations are:
Cameras are turned on. Face to face communication is one of the 12 principles. Our non-verbal cues remain an effective methods to develop teams through developing our trust amongst each other
Everyone’s engagement. As you would in the physical world, ensue everyone on the call is given the floor, whether they have an update or not. The facilitator can choose to appoint the next speaker or ask the current speak to nominate the next until everyone has spoken.
Display the activity board. The activity board remains the focal point for all the discussions. Remember, if it’s not on the board, take the conversation of line. We’re still only interested in cover what individuals have done since the last ceremony, what they plan to work on next and whether they have any issues or challenges.
Stop watch. Stop the ceremony running over time. Display a simple counter on screen.
Filter on activity owner. As each member of the team provides an update, filter the activity board view for easier navigation.
Notes to chat. Use the online chat feature to capture any notes or actions during the ceremony.
Performance charts to the ready. To allow the Scrum Master to quickly provide performance context to anything being discussed, always ensure you can quickly switch to a view of the Sprint Burn Down Chart, Sprint Velocity Chart or Cumulative Flow Diagram.
Do not record. It’s important that we remember to make sure everyone feels comfortable providing an honest update. Therefore, refrain from recording the ceremony.
