Forming Cross Disciplined Agile Teams

Response

Forming successful Agile Teams calls for the adoption of a competency led agile teams appointment framework, which is part of an agile organisation operating model.

The core purpose of the framework is to ensure individual appointment is determined by the core objectives of the agile team within a given period, typically a quarter.

The framework guides the resourcing of the team through the identification and appointment of the core Agile Team members, consisting of the Product Owner, Scrum Master and a lead subject matter expert, who are supported for a specified period.

The appointment of the remaining staff is determined by first identify the competencies required by the team, identifying the individuals with those competencies.

This frame work ensures at all times the Agile Team is formed for success.

Successful Agile teams are formed following the Monetical Team Design process, which consists of the following 5 stages:

  • Feature Roadmap. A set of high-level Features with an associated number of key performance indicators needs to have been published with associated tolerance limits for the coming quarter.

  • Ownership. The appointment of three specific roles who become the core team, taken on responsibility for the entire life cycle. A Product Owner, a subject matter expert and a Scrum Master.

  • Competencies. The core team works together to identify the core competencies (i.e. skills, experience or qualification) that are needed to deliver the Features for the coming quarters. And using an engagement scale the core team determine the contribution needs for each competency.

  • Capabilities. With a clearly defined set of core competencies and an understanding of the engagement model the core agile team is then ready to work with the resource management team to identify the roles within the organisation that are most suitable.

  • Appointment. The final step in the successful formation of an Agile team is securing the appointment of those individuals associated to the required roles. This final step may require individuals to receive training. It may also call for the hiring of others to plug a capability gap. Should this be necessary, then an adjustment to the Feature Roadmap may be required to take account of the extra time needed.
